US FOR AUTONOMY

Us for Autonomy brings grassroots advocates with disabilities together to advance equitable access to the full range of high-quality end-of-life healthcare. We affirm the autonomy and self-determination of people with disabilities to choose end-of-life care that meets our needs, values, and priorities.

To advance equitable access to the full range of high-quality health care, especially at the end of life, Us for Autonomy convenes:

  • advocates

  • experts

  • caregivers

  • providers

  • and members of the public with and without disabilities

The health care system continues to overlook the needs of people with disabilities. It puts barriers in place limiting access to high-quality health care. We recognize that disability is intersectional in nature. As such, groups, who have been historically excluded or marginalized from equitable healthcare, are further obstructed from end-of-life care. This can happen because of multi-layered identities or places in society where disabilities are also present.

There is support for expanding health care options for people with disabilities who are nearing the end of their lives. An equitable health care system in this stage of life includes care that meets our individual needs like:

  • high-quality and affordable medical care

  • home care

  • hospice

  • palliative care

  • medical aid in dying

People with disabilities deserve the autonomy and access to make decisions about their lives, bodies, and health care.

Us for Autonomy provides a space for people with disabilities to expand equitable access to a health care system that fits our individual needs and preserves our dignity. Our commitment to autonomy extends through the end of our lives by:

  • sharing information or stories

  • convening for thoughtful dialogue

  • organizing for advocacy
